Year 2 - Pankhurst 2026 - 2027

Welcome to Year 2! As the senior year of Key Stage 1, this is a wonderful year where children consolidate their foundational skills, grow in self-belief and prepare to become independent learners. In Year 2, we encourage every child to aim high, shine bright, and celebrate all the big steps they take each day.

What to Expect in Year 2

• Growing Confidence: Children take on more responsibility for their own learning and daily routines, building independence and resilience.

• Mastering the Basics: We focus on developing fluent, confident reading, expanding creative writing skills and building strong mental arithmetic and reasoning habits.

• Exploring the World: From discovering history and local geography to hands-on science investigations, topics are designed to spark curiosity and imagination.

• Celebrating Achievement: As the final year of Key Stage 1, we celebrate how far the children have come and support them as they prepare for the step up to Key Stage 2.

Key Stage 1 Teacher Assessments

Towards the end of Year 2, we assess children's progress in reading, writing and mathematics to evaluate their journey through Key Stage 1 and ensure they have a solid foundation for Year 3.

• Teacher-Led Approach: Assessments in Year 2 are based on ongoing teacher assessment rather than high-stakes formal exams. We use classroom work, small-group activities and routine tasks gathered over the whole year to build a complete, accurate picture of your child's progress.

• Low-Pressure Environment: Any quiet tasks or quizzes used to support teacher judgments are kept entirely informal. To the children, these feel like normal everyday classroom learning - there is no stress, strict timing or expectation of revision.

• Focus on Individual Growth: The goal of these assessments is simple: to celebrate how far your child has come since Reception and to give their Year 3 teachers clear, actionable insights to support them seamlessly in Key Stage 2.

• How You Can Help at Home: Keep doing what you do best—reading together daily, encouraging confidence, and celebrating their efforts.

Assessment in Year 2 is simply a tool to support your child's learning, not a measure of their worth. Our focus is always on keeping learning positive, relaxed and enjoyable.
