ELSA – Emotional Literacy Support

We are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing and social development of every child. One of the ways we do this is through ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants), a structured programme led by trained school staff.

ELSA is designed to help children develop the emotional skills they need to succeed both socially and academically. Sessions are delivered in a safe, supportive environment — often within OASIS — and are tailored to meet the individual needs of each child.

How ELSA Works

ELSA support focuses on a wide range of emotional and social skills, including:

  • Understanding and managing feelings

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Developing friendships and social skills

  • Coping with change, loss or bereavement

  • Developing self-regulation and problem-solving skills

  • Managing anxiety and stress

Sessions are usually one-to-one or in small groups and are delivered in a calm, structured way. Children are encouraged to reflect on their feelings, practise strategies, and transfer these skills back into the classroom, playground and home.

Who Can Access ELSA Support?

ELSA is available to any child who may benefit from additional emotional support. This might include children who:

  • Are experiencing anxiety, stress or low mood

  • Struggle with social interaction or making friends

  • Have experienced a significant life event such as bereavement or family change

  • Need support developing emotional regulation or resilience

Referrals can be made by teachers, parents, or our Pastoral Team, and all support is delivered confidentially.

Our ELSA Team

Our ELSAs are specially trained school staff who work closely with the Pastoral Team to ensure consistent support across the school. They help children develop strategies that promote wellbeing, confidence and independence.

How Parents Can Help

We encourage parents and carers to be involved in the ELSA process. Staff can provide guidance on how to support children at home, reinforcing the skills and strategies learned in sessions.

If you think your child could benefit from ELSA support, please contact the school office to discuss how we can help.
