Transitions to high school
Moving from primary to secondary school is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring challenges for children and their families. Children may feel nervous about new routines, meeting new teachers, or making friends in a larger school environment.
Parents and carers can help support a smooth transition by:
Talking openly: Encourage your child to share their thoughts and worries about the move. Listen carefully and reassure them that feeling nervous is normal.
Visiting the school: Attend induction events, open days or orientation sessions to help your child become familiar with the new environment.
Establishing routines: Preparing children with consistent sleep, meal and homework routines can help them adjust to new schedules.
Encouraging independence: Help your child practise organisational skills, such as managing their timetable, packing a school bag, and keeping track of homework.
Fostering friendships: Encourage opportunities to meet new classmates, attend clubs, or connect with peers before the start of term.
Working with school staff: Secondary schools often have pastoral teams or form tutors who can provide additional support during the transition period.
A positive transition is supported by reassurance, preparation, and maintaining open communication. With guidance and encouragement, children can approach secondary school with confidence and resilience.
