Year 2 Common Exception Words

By the end of KS1 the children are expected to be able to spell almost all of the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words accurately within their independent writing.

What are Common Exception Words?

Common exception words are words in which the English spelling code works in an unusual or uncommon way. They are not words for which phonics 'doesn't work', but they may be exceptions to spelling rules, or words which use a particular combination of letters to represent sound patterns in a rare way.

Some exception words are used very frequently, which is why children are introduced to them very early on in their phonics learning (in Reception, alongside high frequency words).

How can I help my child at home?

In school your child is frequently exposed to these words, through classroom activities, daily phonics sessions and small group intervention work. However, it would be useful to support your child by identifying these common words within their reading and choosing a couple each week to practice alongside their weekly spellings.
